A Moleskine Planner Is Reporting For Duty
12/31/2011It’s New Year’s Eve and my Moleskine Weekly Diary/Planner is begging to be put to use. What better way than to set some goals in writing. This Moleskine has a calendar on the left and a lined page on the right which is perfect to list targets, notes, and thoughts on what to accomplish and by when in 2012.
This is just for the big stuff. Resolutions are so easily forgotten and this looks like an easy way to keep track of my progress. Well, sort of. Would it be cheating if I wrote in pencil?
Do you have any trouble with fountain pen ink on the Moleskine paper? I must have very wet writers because they all feather on Moleskine paper these days.

by cygnoir 12/31/2011 at 5:43 pmCheck out my review link in the post for some ink tests I did earlier this month. The paper feathers in the usual way with some wide nibs and free-flowing inks. It also has the less common tendency to absorb ink along some of the paper fibers. That isn’t exclusive to Moleskine but it is consistent performance issue with their products. That kind of feathering doesn’t bother me in a planner, diary, or journal though I would object to it for other uses. I can certainly understand objecting to any type of feathering which eliminates Moleskine for many fountain pen aficionados.
My mention of using a pencil had two meanings. One is that a pencil never feathers and so fits Moleskine well. The other is that I can erase and re-write history. Both suit me rather well. 🙂

The Sharpie automatic pencil seems like a perfect fit for your new planner!

by inkophile 12/31/2011 at 7:35 pmI won a Quo Vadis calendar from Exaclair! I can’t wait to get started. As far as Inks go: I tested some inks and nibs, all Lamy Al-Stars with different inks and was surprised to see my newest addition, a Fine nib with Noodler’s Burma Road, actually did the best. I’ll have to give a pencil a try too! I never thought of that.

by Wilson Hines 12/31/2011 at 7:21 pmPencil may seem old school but it works on everything. I have several mechanical pencils made by Autopoint and used them daily. Might have something to do with being able to change my mind about what I’ve written. Girls are like that you know…

by inkophile 12/31/2011 at 7:38 pmI liked the Moleskine planners I used (I had their pocket dailies until last year). The ones I had (and perhaps I was lucky) seemed to have better paper than the Moleskine pocket notebooks I bought at the same time.
Last year, I used a Ciak daily, which was ok, but suffered from overly thin pages. I’ve gone for a budget choice this year, with a Black N Red day to page diary – £5 cheaper than the Ciak, and vastly superior paper, so far as my tests so far can tell. (Reviewed here, fwiw; http://monkeyphotomcr.blogspot.com/2011/12/review-black-n-red-day-per-page-diary.html ).
Good luck with your resolutions, in any case!

by John the Monkey 01/01/2012 at 10:43 amHappy New Year. I hope this posts. I have vision problems with contrast issues and waste my time doing comments that I c an’t post. I am not on twitter. So you would have had more comments if I had been able to figure it out. And, from the erudition and skill I see on pen sites I can almost hear people mumbling about how I couldn’t possibly fit. I think only pilots, former secret agents, and artists can apply, but that is just me being nervous about my limited vision and resources. But I will definitely be journaling this year as I got a gift certificate to Barnes & Noble and bought graph paper books by a Spanish firm Michelrius and ran tests like I have seen members do and they passed swimmingly. So I will feel free to use my Crayola Pen Markers as well as my inks. Someday I am going to get something free. That is my goal. Everything I have is over 30 years old, even the ink. Someday I will pick up some skills and make it thru. I have always been a danger to myself and others, and that will never change. Grandfather made sure I had a weapon with me at all times, one no one would suspect. Now for the pen… Wish me well, one and all. I enjoy all the links.
