Pen World And Artisan Penmaker Tim Cullen

10/30/2016

The pen community is fortunate to have a gorgeous magazine like Pen World with its in-depth articles and sumptuous pen porn. Even the ads are amazing. Follow on Facebook and Instagram to see some of those photos. Admittedly, they are a hook for me.

Recently, Pen World provided a PDF of an article about Tim Cullen, artisan penmaker, to share with my friends. Who wouldn’t want one of his eclectic creations!

Signature Ink And A Color Wheel

08/24/2016

Color is the first hook for any ink. From jewel tones to muted whispers, color gets us where it matters. We buy what appeals to us and then share it with friends and associates via the written word. But what does that color communicate?

The August 2016 issue of Pen World magazine has an article I wrote called Signature Ink. Nicky Pessaroff, the new editor, was kind enough to send the PDF for Inkophile readers, but here is one of the graphics to get you started.

Start at the top and work counter-clockwise to match inks with their names. Which color best represents you?

If you aren’t a Pen World subscriber, there is nothing quite like having a beautifully photographed, well-written magazine in your hands. The colors are true unlike what passes for accuracy on an electronic display. You should see the Staedtler ad on the back cover of the August issue. It is absolutely stunning. And that’s just an ad! You’ll have to subscribe to find out what’s on the inside.

Pen World And An Inkophile

08/21/2015

Recently, Pen World invited me to write an article for the August, 2015 issue. The topic of overlooked inks was proposed by the editor, Laura Chandler, and it proved to be a very good choice for an inkophile.

It didn’t take long to come up with the initial five, but that expanded to ten with no effort. Frankly, it could have been a lot more. Despite new colors, revamped lines and even the occasional new ink maker, all  news worthy of note, there are hundreds of inks already available that are amazing and delightful to use.

The next time boredom sets in or your rotation seems stale, go to the back of your shelf and look for an ink that hasn’t seen a pen in ages. You might be surprised by one that fell out of favor or worse, never got its due. Usually, my ink didn’t find a good mate though a more recent pen might suit it perfectly. Perhaps a new brand of paper brings out shading or makes the pen glide across the surface in a most satisfying way. I’ve resurrected some inks with little thought other than the color suited my fancy at the moment. Isn’t that simple?

Whatever the reason, giving an ink a second chance to make you love it is worth the effort. Aren’t “cheap” thrills the best?

Thank you, Laura, for asking me to write for Pen World. It was fun to collaborate on a project and I hope we can do it again.

A final thank you to Tessa Maurer who shot the photos. It certainly helps to have a talented photographer in the family.

Here is a PDF of the article for those who didn’t see it in Pen World. If you didn’t, consider a subscription. There is nothing quite like ogling gorgeous fountain pens depicted in four-color glory. If you are a pen nut, Pen World could be just the place for you.

A Trio Of Pen Links

08/09/2015

Lost my saved links for the week along with my trust in Firefox. “Not responding” has become a drag on using the web so switching to Chrome has become inevitable.

Only three links to share, but they are good ones.

Links From Pens To Nibs To Words

06/14/2015

If nothing else, do watch Leigh’s video about nibs. It will sort any confusions about flex nibs plus it’s a joy to watch her use any sort of pen.

Tuckered out after a bath and fifteen minutes of zoomies to get dry. Aren’t I just the cutest thing ever!
