Turquoise on Moleskine
06/30/2010Turquoise is this summer’s hottest color but not on Moleskine. As usual feathering and bleed-through mar the paper’s performance to a degree that will be intolerable to many users of fountain pens.
Most of the feathering is the usual sort that one encounters with a Mole. The ink travels along fibers in a spidery fashion. It is rather odd to watch. Write a word then wait a few seconds and watch the ink seek out the perfect fibers to color. Presto! Tiny lines in every direction.
The bleed-through is significant enough to spoil the back of every page. However, all three inks dried quickly so that is to the good.
Though there isn’t a huge difference between the inks, Diamine Mediterranean Blue performed the worst while Iroshizuku Ku-Jaku was marginally the best. J. Herbin Bleu Pervenche is the nicest turquoise for the creamy Moleskine paper but the feathering was almost as significant as with the Diamine ink.
So there you have it. Turquoise on Moleskine ought to be fantastic but not with fountain pen ink. Hrumph.

Wow I am so blown away by your knowledge of pens and paper…it’s really impressive! I have a feeling you could save me a whole bunch of money and time. My daughter wants me to hand paint her converse shoes…canvas of course, and I have no idea what pens to use. I am a painter, dabble a bit in drawing my ink compulsions, but don’t have a clue about fabric and pens.

Moleskine paper is terrible about feathering. It’s a shame really because their notebooks/journals are very well designed. Thank goodness FP people have Rhodia, Clairefontaine, Quo Vadis and Exacompta to fill that niche.

Try Noodlers Navajo Turquoise. I have been testing it with a Lamy Studio fine without such problems.

It amazes me that so many fountain pen users are still picking up moleskines. I gave them up almost as instantly as I found Rhodia and Clairefontaine. Never a feathering problem and rarely a bleed through. The new webbies are the greatest gift to a FP user.

Sometimes the paper is acceptable so I reckon we just hope the next journal we purchase is one of the good ones. 🙂
