A Handful of Handwriting Links
09/27/2009In September there was a spate of articles about handwriting from its delights to its difficulty to its datedness to its demise. Check out the links, then post your comments. I expect your opinions will be just as strong as those expressed below.
- Umberto Eco: The lost art of handwriting
- Seize the rewards of writing your own handwritten notes…before it’s too late
- Handwriting instruction is ‘hanging in there’
- Cursive cursed. Texting and e-mail trump handwritten notes
- County Teachers Brush Up on Techniques for Teaching Handwriting
- More on the Importance of Handwriting
- The pen may be mightier than the keyboard
- Penmanship is Back: PenelopePoet.com Introduces Rings Engraved with the Customer’s Handwriting
- What your handwriting says about your future
- Signatures that Speak Volumes
- Editor’s notes: Paper thin
- Improve Your Handwriting with an “Alternative Hold”
If all that inspires you to work on your penmanship, check out some earlier posts on the subject here and here or visit the Calligraphy & Penmanship links in the sidebar. Let me know if you have a favorite handwriting site that should be included. That’s one list that will always have room for growth.
The Eco article from the guardian no longer seems available, however this looks like it was the same article.

by inkophile 10/01/2009 at 5:59 amAt our blog, we asked the question of whether fountain pens improve children’s handwriting. The consensus seemed to be that they very well could, but, of course, it depends on the child.
And, I know it’s probably a few years old, but the article on handwriting at Paperpenalia.com by Dyas Lawson is, to my mind, the definitive word on good handwriting.

As anecdotal evidence my teen daughter’s writing improved with the adoption of a fountain pen. It wasn’t bad to start but it’s even better after a couple years practice with a stealth-colored Lamy Safari EF and J. Herbin Perle Noire. That it looks cool is just an added perk.

by inkophile 10/03/2009 at 3:35 pmI’ve never used a fountain pen, but I’ve so many people writing about what a pleasure it is, I’m starting to think I might give it a try. I just need to find one with a nice thick, comfortable grip.

by TonyB 10/06/2009 at 8:39 pmThank you for sharing these links. I had seen some of them by putting “handwritten notes” and “personal notes” in a Google Alert, but it didn’t pick up all of these. I am so passionate about this that I’ve started a Facebook Group called “Revive the art of personal note-writing!” (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=24322705460&ref=ts). I’d welcome anyone to join us…to peruse or to join the conversation.
